Questa settimana è stato proiettato alla borsa archeologica di Paestum un docufilm che si intitola "Herculaneum, diari del buio e della luce" del regista Marcellino De Baggis e promosso dal Centro Herculaneum guidato da Christian Biggi.
Frutto di un anno di riprese realizzate sul territorio, contiene materiale esclusivo proveniente dagli archivi fotografici della Soprintendenza, delle Teche RAI e dell’Istituto Luce.
In giorni funesti a livello internazionale per il crollo della casa dei gladiatori di Pompei che ha suscitato polemiche e preoccupazione, a Ercolano le strutture sono intatte grazie soprattutto a David W. Packard, presidente del Packard Humanities Institute.
Insieme a Andrew Wallace - Hadrill, direttore nel 2000 della British School of Rome visitarono gli scavi archeologici e decisero di creare l'Herculaneum Conservation Project. Packard decise così in accordo con la Soprintendenza di Pompei di avviare un progetto per la salvaguardia del sito di Ercolano.

Fu creata un'apposita squadra di studiosi che effettuarono studi e analisi al fine di comprendere quali fossero i problemi più urgenti per la conservazione del sito e così giunsero le prime donazioni economiche da parte del Packard Humanities Institute.
Grazie ad un contratto di sponsorizzazione che permise alla British School of Rome di gestire i lavori, fu avviata una robusta opera di conservazione per tutte le aree ad emergenza e a rischio negli scavi archeologici, dagli edifici agli affreschi.
Se Ercolano oggi sorride lo deve all'impegno di tante persone e soprattutto al fondatore della HP Mr David Woodley Packard che ha ricevuto il 2 novembre 2009 la cittadinanza onoraria dal primo cittadino accanto alla statua di Marco Nonio Balbo, mecenate e protettore dell'antica Herculaneum.
E così, un pò come il santo patrono San Gennaro, il signor Packard ha tutelato questo immenso patrimonio investendo risorse in un progetto che si estende in più anni, risolvendo il problema dello smaltimento delle acque piovane - tra le cause del crollo di Pompei - oltre al rischio di umidità che corrompeva decorazioni, pareti ed affreschi.

Come accadeva fino agli anni '60, quando maestranze esperte intervenivano al minimo segnale di ogni problema alle strutture, il lavoro congiunto di architetti, archeologi e ingegneri ha permesso di riportare all'antica funzione le fogne in cui venivano raccolte le acque con la stessa saggezza di allora.
Dopo aver ricevuto la cittadinanza onoraria, Packard ha detto: "L'unica tristezza per me è non avere neanche una goccia di sangue italiano".

This week was screened at the archaeological site of Paestum a documentary film titled "Herculaneum, diaries of darkness and light" of the director Marcelino De Baggis Herculaneum and promoted by the Herculaneum Centre led by Christian Biggi.
The result of a year of videos made in the area, contains exclusive material coming from the photographic archives of the Pompeii archeological Institution, the Teche RAI and Istituto Luce.

In fatal days at an international level for the collapse of the home of the gladiators of Pompeii, which sparked controversy, concerning in Herculaneum all the structures are intact thanks to David W. Packard, president of the Packard Humanities Institute. In 2000 he visited the archeological ruins with Andrew Wallace - Hadrill, director of the British School of Rome. They decided to create the Herculaneum Conservation Project and Mr Packard decided in agreement with the Pompeii archeological Institution to initiate a project to safeguard the site of Herculaneum.
It was created a special team of researchers who conduct studies and analysis in order to understand what were the most urgent issues for preserving the site and so came the first donations and by the Packard Humanities Institute.
Thanks to a sponsorship deal that allowed the British School of Rome to manage the work was started by a robust storage for all areas of emergency and risk in archaeological sites, buildings and frescoes.
If Ercolano smiles today owes to the commitment of many people and especially to the founder of Mr. David Woodley Packard HP has received 2 November 2009 the honorary citizenship by the Mayor, near the statue of Marcus Nonius Balbus, patron and protector of ancient Herculaneum .
And so, a bit like the patron saint San Gennaro, Mr. Packard has protected this great resource of old patrimony assets by investing in a project that spans multiple years, solving the problem of disposing of stormwater - a cause of the collapse of Pompeii - as well the risk of moisture corrupted decorations, walls and frescoes.
As was the case until the '60s, when skilled workers intervened at the least sign of any problems to the structures, the combined work of architects, archaeologists and engineers made it possible to restore the old function in the sewers where the waters were collected with the same wisdom then.
After receiving the honorary citizenship, Packard said: "The only sadness for me is not having a single drop of Italian blood."
